Pick up a picnic at Pickwicks

Try saying that after enjoying a glass of wine or a cool beer at the relaxing café and bistro that has become established as the best place in Wells to enjoy a perfect cup of coffee!

Whether you settle for your favourite cappuccino or latte, or opt for one of the specialities such as caramel truffle with Irish cream syrup, caramel sauce and espresso topped with steamed whole, skimmed or soya milk, you can relax in the knowledge that it is all Rainforest Alliance approved.

Host, Simon Davies, will be the first to admit he’s not one to sit back and enjoy his own coffee, preferring to be busy thinking about his next steps.  Serving great coffee is still undoubtedly a passion, but now that he’s got that down to a fine art he’s extending the offer with some additions that we thought you’d like to know about.

Take Away

Pickwicks is not so much a room with a view as an Aladdin’s cave of tables each with it’s own Somerset view, thanks to the displays of art from Pennybatch gallery, including atmospheric photography by Jake Vincent as shown here, and paintings by Jackie Spurrier, Myrtle Pizzey and Peter Vincent.  But, no matter how good the art, or how relaxing the atmosphere, there are times when customers would rather eat outside, in the Abbey grounds or on the Cathedral green for example, or want to take lunch or supper back to work or home.

Everything on the menu (apart from hot main courses) is now available to take away.  Choose from sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes with a wide range of fillings from local cheddar cheese, to my own favourites Somerset brie & cranberry and crayfish tails.  There are also healthy salads, toasted sandwiches and panninis, not just the traditional favourites, but also some tasty Somerset specials, and of course the full range of coffees and soft drinks, including milkshakes, smoothies, Fentimans botanical drinks and Frobisher’s fruit juices.  For those with a sweet tooth, there’s always a lovely selection of handmade cakes.

Drinks License

Fancy a cool beer or a glass of wine in relaxing surroundings? Pickwicks now has a license and serves Bath Ales and Butcombe beers, Orchard Pig cider and a selection of wines from around the world.  All available 7 days a week.

Time for tea

Tea is more popular in the UK than just about anywhere around the world, so it is surprising to learn that we are behind the times in serving tea away from home.  Anyone who has been to Sri Lanka, China or Australia will be familiar with teahouses; cafes where customers go to enjoy a really good cup of tea with or without food.  It’s not just the surroundings that are special though; it’s the variety and quality of the tea served.  This trend is catching on in London and Manchester, and Pickwicks have brought it to Wells!  “We want to offer teas that match the standards of our coffees”, says Simon.  “We have a full range of Ronnenfeldt teas to suit all tastes, and have trained our staff to brew and serve them at their best”.

The range includes black teas like delicate Darjeeling, full-bodied Assam and English Breakfast, green tea, fruit teas and herbal infusions.

Loyalty card

Pickwicks have been running a loyalty card scheme for some time; visit soon to take advantage of their current double stamps offer.
